Garden Space Integrated With House Design

Our clients bought a house that hadn’t been touched for many years and needed complete renovation. The plot size was very good with plenty of space for a drive, parking, garage and a large garden.

Our brief was to:

  1. Extend the house to form a new master bedroom suite at first floor with two home studies at ground floor

  2. Create an open plan Kitchen and Living space with view of the garden

  3. Renovate the existing house to make it much more energy efficient

We started by removing some old extensions to reinstate the simple rectangular house plan. Then we added a 2 storey wing connected to the main house with a glass link where we also located the staircase.

The whole of the rear wall of the old house was removed and supported by some new steelwork so that we could create a curved glazed extension, the full width of the house, to take advantage of garden views. The resulting open plan spaces flows from Living to Kitchen to Terrace seamlessly.

The dark hardwood staircase forms a strong new feature and the glass risers make it transparent as possible.

At first floor the new master bedroom suite has a vaulted ceiling and the box bay window looks out over the rear garden.

The insulation levels throughout were significantly increased and in particular the external wall insulation uses a wood based insulation board behind the ground floor render finish and first floor tile hanging.

Our original choice for the roof and tile hanging was for a modern grey tile, however the planners insisted on the traditional red/brown colour you now see.

The client recently got in touch to send us some pictures of the scheme with the garden landscaping complete.

Landscaping is so important but in many cases it is delayed to give the client time to recover from the building work. Gardens also need time to grow and fill out.

Although we don’t design gardens, we always respond to the possibilities of garden design by thinking about sun paths and garden views during the concept stage of the project. We build on those ideas to make sure that when the garden matures it becomes an external space that forms an integral part of the overall house design.
