Infill Extension to Listed Building

At first glance this project seemed quite simple. The client’s brief was to replace the existing 1960’s extension with an infill to the rear, set behind the old part of the listed building and hidden from view. The house is also within Greenbelt and so we had to negotiate with the planners to allow the maximum size of extension permitted.

However our first sketches were rejected by the listed building officer because they concealed more of the existing historic rear elevation than the old extension did. Our solution was to drop the floor level slightly and design the infill extension with a super-thin flat roof with a glazed panel next to the historic rear elevation. Not only did this avoid concealing the old elevation, but it allowed a new view from inside the building that enhanced the understanding of the listed building.

Internally the glazed roof brings light into the heart of the plan and the view out of the sky, even when it's raining, is delightful and unexpected.
