Hodsall Street Sunken Kitchen
Like many of our clients, the brief was for family living space with a strong connection to the garden. In this case the house had been extended in the 19th century as well as in the 70's and 80's, resulting in a poor ground floor plan. The conservatory was a real eyesore on the rear elevation that harmed the setting of the listed building.
Our challenge as Architects was to relocate the Kitchen, create some family space and connect to the garden without harming the listed building.
Our initial proposal was to demolish the conservatory and create an infill extension between the rear wings that were built in the 1980's. However we had to amend the design to avoid concealing more of the part of the historic part rear elevation that was still visible. The only way to avoid that was to drop the Kitchen extension into the ground by 1m so that the new roof aligned with the tile hanging.
You can see how closely the finished extension matches the design, both inside and out. The view from the Kitchen to the garden works well and in the summer the terrace is very easy to access.
