New Swimming Pool Annexe

to Listed Building

This annexe is in the garden of a high profile grade 2 listed building and so the relationship between the annexe and the main building was critical to avoid harming the setting of the main house. We decided to create a modern design of high quality that would make a statement of its own, but remain subservient to the main house.

The pitched roof shapes follow the style of the adjoining buildings but are used in a contemporary way to create a large internal volumes in the swimming pool space. Large sliding/folding doors give access from the pool to the garden areas in fine weather.

Our work included careful integration of the pool structure, air handling system and pool cover aided by detailed 3D design of the whole building that the client and builder used extensively to understand the design and construction.

Indoor pools present a dual challenge as they should be designed as an extension of both the house and the garden. Interiors need to be spacious to allow for comfortable air quality and to balance the large scale of the pool itself. Doors connecting to house and garden need to be large and easy to open. Edges, steps, covers and lighting need to be beautifully detailed. The equipment must be carefully positioned to avoid the noise and to make maintenance easy.
