Minster Care Home
The "Street" Concept
Our job as Architects is to take a tired 1970's care home and renovating and adding new rooms to suit residents with dementia.
Our design for this Care Home in Kent has features that create a homely feel to avoid the conventional institutional design.
There is an indoor street where residents can sit and get involved with the goings on of the home and say hello to other residents and staff. These 3D model images show what the finished building will look like - its definitely not boring!
We have tried to break up the corridors serving residents rooms by creating recessed areas where the entrance doors are located, forming a kind of lobby that serves each pair of rooms. These lobbies have a different floor finish and the walls are lined with timber veneered panels.
To combat sound echoes we are using sound absorbent curved ceiling panels that are also decorative. Lighting of the corridors is mainly from high output LED strip lighting hidden in a timber cornice detail.
The bedrooms have been designed with en-suite showers plus space for a wardrobe and wall mounted TV. They are also wide enough to cope with hospital beds if required. Each room has a strong coloured theme used for the entrance door and one internal wall that helps residents with Dementia remember which is their room.
