Tunbridge Wells House Transformation

Tunbridge Wells House Transformation

A couple approached us to redesign their house in Tunbridge Wells to suit their young growing family. They had bought a house built in the 1980’s on a lovely plot tucked away next to woodland within walking distance of Tunbridge Wells station, but it had become too small and needed complete renovation and a family extension. Their brief was to add 2 bedrooms and create a large Family Kitchen Living area.

We work in 3D all time and so we made a 3D model of the existing building, then altered that to add two extra bedrooms in a new first floor to the existing single storey wing a and created a large kitchen and family area with a high vaulted ceiling that includes a south facing light scoop. We have also used the staircase to create a double height space with large windows looking directly into the adjoining woodland.

One of the key success factors on this project was the use of 3D design. The whole project was made available to the client and the builder as a 3D virtual building that you can walk around inside and out so that everyone is clear about what is required. Working in 3D also ensures that all plans, sections, elevations and details are fully coordinated and correct.

You can see in the images what the house looked like before, the 3D design drawings and the finished building.

We overcame the challenge posed by the proximity of protected trees and their root structure by working closely with the structural engineer to design foundations that avoided the roots and did not harm the protected trees and that won the approval of the council tree officer.

Planning consent was obtained in only 8 weeks and construction work was completed ahead of schedule using one of our regular contractors who are skilled at implementing our designs at the quality and cost needed.
