Spanish Villa Renovation

Updating Spanish Courtyard Villa

This project was for the refurbishment of a large detached single storey villa in southern Spain. Built in the 1960's it was in dire need of alterations and renovations to make it suitable for its new owners, a young family requiring open plan spaces to entertain a large extended family and friends in a contemporary style that suits their lifestyle.

The existing villa was designed as a series of small rooms arranged around a large service courtyard with no access apart from the small windows of individual rooms.

We saw the opportunity of changing this service courtyard into a beautiful central courtyard by completely opening up the internal walls with large windows and bi-fold doors, with easy access to open plan living spaces and private bedroom suites.

The floor level and finishes of the courtyard are at the same level as the house, providing a flow of space between living areas, party spaces and internal garden. The open plan living areas open onto a large veranda with access to the garden and swimming pool.
